Europe's largest sports business conference will take place at the Congress Center Düsseldorf

May 25, 2023

First the start of the Handball European Championship, then "the EURO" - the final matches of the 2024 UEFA European Football Championship: In 2024, Düsseldorf will certainly not be short of major sports mega-events.

This is also evident at this year's SPOBIS Conference. Europe's largest sports business event, taking place on May 31st and June 1st at the CCD Congress Center Düsseldorf, expects more than 4,000 international participants and over 200 speakers.

"The upcoming European Football Championship is a special event," says Marco Klewenhagen, Managing Partner of SPOBIS GmbH. But it's not the only one: "There are many other major sports events in 2023 and 2024 that will be discussed at the SPOBIS Conference, including the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris."

For two days, the SPOBIS Conference revolves around the topics that are essential for today's major sports events and professional sports - the rights and licensing marketing for media, sponsors, merchandising, and advertising industry. Whether it's football, handball, ice hockey, basketball, American football, or Formula 1: The SPOBIS Conference brings together clubs, leagues, and associations from home and abroad to discuss their marketing, digitization, and sustainability strategies with media, agencies, and top companies.

Most interesting event of its kind in Europe

A program that is unique in Europe, says Hans-Joachim Watzke, CEO of Borussia Dortmund: "This is certainly the most interesting event in this field in Europe."

Central topics include sports event marketing, branding and sponsorship, digitization and media strategy, as well as technology support and the sustainability of sports events - a topic that is gaining increasing importance in the sports sector. A visible sign of this is the "Sustainability in Sports Award," which will be presented for the second time by SPOBIS GmbH and the DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga, with the support of HypoVereinsbank, in a total of four categories.

Düsseldorf is a sports city

The SPOBIS Conference highlights the importance of Düsseldorf as a sports city, says Lord Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller: "Düsseldorf is a sports city. We have our Fortuna and DEG teams, probably the best table tennis player outside of China, and our women's team are indoor hockey champions. We host the Invictus Games, the Finals, the Handball European Championship, and of course, the Euro 2024. It is therefore no wonder that the leading event in sports business in Europe also takes place in the state capital. I wish all participants a successful conference."

With the SPOBIS Conference, this role as a sports city is also visible in the congress business, says Maria Kofidou, CEO of Düsseldorf Congress GmbH: "The SPOBIS Conference is an excellent opportunity to showcase the image of Düsseldorf as a sports location at an international level and to present the CCD Congress Center Düsseldorf as a venue for international sports conferences."

The Düsseldorf Congress team strengthens the image of Düsseldorf as a sports city

For the past ten years, the SPOBIS Conference has found its home in Düsseldorf. Marco Klewenhagen adds: "Düsseldorf and the CCD are very suitable as a city and location because the location and atmosphere are right. But especially the people behind CCD, with the team led by CEO Maria Kofidou, are very competent and always act in a customer-friendly and partnership-oriented manner. We are very grateful for that. It's not something you find everywhere."
