Having an espresso with Franziska Pfaff from The Zipper
September, 19 2025How does The Zipper stand out from other hotels in the city, particularly in terms of guest experiences and design?
The Zipper combines digitalization, modern design, and top functionality in one of Düsseldorf’s most attractive locations, directly on the Rhine. Each of the 168 stylish apartments features a high-quality kitchen and is equipped with premium brand products as well as additional amenities such as a washer-dryer and dishwasher.
A special highlight of our property is the digital guest journey. Our innovative concept allows guests to organize their check-in from home and check in completely contactless via smartphone – without long waits at a reception desk, which we no longer have. Despite this digital approach, we place great emphasis on personal hospitality. Especially in the 450 m² community space on the 13th floor – with a panoramic sauna, modern fitness studio equipped with Technogym machines, as well as co-working and co-cooking areas – guests and hosts come together in a relaxed atmosphere.
What role does sustainability play at The Zipper, and what measures have been implemented?
Sustainability is a central pillar of The Zipper Hotel & Apartments and has been consistently embedded from the beginning. One core element of our sustainability strategy is the use of durable, high-quality materials and appliances that ensure both guest comfort and resource efficiency.
Thanks to the digital guest journey, traditional paper registration forms are no longer needed. We also carefully select our suppliers based on ecological criteria, such as our partner ClimAid, which provides climate-neutral beverages with short transport routes. Additionally, we prioritize working with local suppliers to ensure short supply chains and minimize our carbon footprint. Energy-efficient lighting is used throughout the property.
What special services or offers do you provide specifically for business guests and event planners?
A unique feature of our concept is the digital check-in, ensuring maximum efficiency. Business guests value this smooth, convenient process, which allows them to enter their apartment hassle-free. For events, this is an added advantage: groups can complete their check-in in advance from home, avoiding long waits on-site – a real benefit for event planners who want to ensure flawless operations.
In addition, the community space provides everything business travelers need: from co-working and co-cooking to networking opportunities that foster valuable connections.
How do you collaborate with other stakeholders in Düsseldorf to position the hotel as part of the city?
Strategic partnerships are fundamental to connecting The Zipper with the city. Düsseldorf-Heerdt, our location, is gaining increasing importance. Together with our partners, we actively highlight the strengths of this side of the Rhine: a prime location, a tram stop right outside, a parking garage with over 400 spaces, and a family-friendly park nearby.
We also maintain close cooperation with city stakeholders such as Düsseldorf Convention. Together, we develop creative formats like the Community Marathon Weekend, promoted via social media in collaboration with the channel duesseldorf_de and other partners. Alongside contests, we create content that showcases Düsseldorf as a vibrant city and The Zipper as an urban “home away from home.”
What trends or developments do you currently see in the hotel and tourism industry, and how is The Zipper preparing for them?
Digitalization & AI, sustainability, new target groups, as well as direct bookings and platform regulations are currently among the most discussed topics at industry events.
At The Zipper, we respond with a fully digital, app-free, web-based check-in and check-out that guests can complete from home. Around 80% of communication runs via WhatsApp – fast, direct, and simple. At the same time, we remain personally present on-site as passionate hosts.
For new target groups, we emphasize our community approach: we actively connect with the city, for example through collaborations with running clubs, to make sports and lifestyle accessible to our guests, particularly long-stay guests.
Sustainability is also key – from efficient processes to flexible living concepts such as our serviced apartments. And finally, we are strengthening our direct bookings via our own website, with clear communication, attractive direct-booking benefits, and a strong digital presence across all relevant channels – while new EU regulations are gradually reducing dependence on major booking platforms.
